Flooding: Emetu Charges Abians Against Blocking Drainages

Engineer Ilechukwu Emetu, the deputy governor of Abia State, has charged Abians against dumping refuse in the drainages in order not to cause blockages which could lead to flooding and erosion.

Emetu said this while observing and also supervising the renewed monthly environmental exercise in the state where he observed that at Amaekpu Ohafia in the state.

The deputy governor led the exercise from Hospital Road in Amaekpu Ohafia where he practically cleared bushes and mobilised a wheel tractor scraper to grade the road, and also engaged required manpower to desilt both sides of the drainage, where a payloader and numbered tipper trucks evacuated the debris thereof, thereby recovering the actual dimension of the road.
The road connects six villages in the present day Ohafia clan (Isiama Ward precisely), and was abandoned over 20 years ago by the past administrations, leaving it at the mercy of grasses and vegetation leading to narrowing of the road and difficulty for cars to navigate freely.
While speaking to residents of the area, the deputy governor advised them to desist from dumping refuse in the drainage which results in blockage of water ways.

He urged all Abia residents to always observe the monthly environmental sanitation in order to keep the state clean. “Abia is God’s own State, and cleanliness is next to godliness,” Engineer Emetu said while speaking to the press moments after the exercise.
